Sri Arthanareeswarar Temple

The unique Sri Arthanareeswarar Temple in Nanganallur, near Palavanthangal railway station, features a life-size statue of Durga housed in a separate sannadhi. Dedicated to Sri Arthanareeswarar, the temple holds several distinctive characteristics:

  • Deities: The primary deities of the temple are Sri Arthanareeswarar (Shiva in the form of half-man and half-woman) and Sri Arthanareeswari. Additionally, there are stucco images of various deities such as Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durga in the sanctum sanctorum.
  • Architecture: Facing east, the temple boasts a 5-tier Rajagopuram and a large pond on its left side. The entrance is adorned with a Dwajasthambam, Palai pedam, and Nandi. The sanctum sanctorum comprises sanctum, artha mandapam, and maha mandapam. The relief of Arthanareeswarar standing in front of Nandi is a significant feature.
  • History: According to legend, the moolavar (main deity) was unearthed from the temple pond, a miraculous event attributed to Sri Kanchi Maha Periyava.
  • Mandapams: The temple houses mandapams with sannidhis for Natarajar, Arthanareeswarar, Somaskandar, and Navagrahas. Additionally, there is an Ashtabhuja Durgai temple located behind the main sanctum with a dedicated mandapam. The Durgai statue, about 6-7 feet tall, depicts her with various weapons, including a conch and a discus, in her upper hands.
  • Devotion: The temple is revered by devotees for its unique depiction of Arthanareeswarar and the presence of the Durga statue. The Simha vahanam (lion vehicle) in front of the Durgai temple adds to the spiritual ambiance.
